Straightening Out A Few Common SEO Misconceptions
Most website owners have a good idea of what Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is about, but superstition still reigns. That’s why companies with alleged association with Google, companies that ‘guarantee’ first-page rankings, and even some that claim access to ‘SEO secrets’ still exist.
This article will try and shed some light on SEO misconceptions as well as try to reinstate SEO as an organic yet surefire way of driving visitors to your web.
Some common SEO misconceptions
1. First-page results are all that matters.
First-page rankings are very relative and perhaps a bit overrated. You may rank first for the keyword ‘4WD Singapore’ and consider yourself a very lucky webmaster. However, you may have a first-page ranking for ‘4WD Singapore backroads vehicles’, which is a very specific keyword that few people search for. ‘But that’s still a first-page result’, some might say. Well, it is, but it’s not very useful.
We suggest approaching the topic differently. Perhaps you should confine your website to a number of smaller first-page results and focus on one or two bigger ones that drive the bulk of the traffic? For example, we rank first for keywords such as ‘Seo Singapore‘, which is a competitive keyword but not too fancy.
2. Ranking for competitive keywords requires a lot of time and effort.
That’s probably true. However, this statement implies that competitive keywords are all that matters, as if a business that doesn’t rank first on popular keywords will never succeed. And that’s not true. Keywords with a slightly lower competition, such as ‘Graphic Design Singapore’ are better as they have less competition and bring interested visitors.
3. SEO is a manipulative art where the one with most knowledge win.
Nah, SEO is all about preparing your web page for Google, Bing and other search engines. And the main device for doing that is content. Well-written content that answers the queries that search engine users send. If you’ve always wondered how to do SEO but never got around to doing it, you’ll still have a good place to start if you’ve filled your website with valuable content (and preferably someone has noticed that content and linked you).
