What to do and what to avoid in Email Marketing

26th October, 2012

Are you new to email marketing? Do you have trouble reaching your target audience simply because you don’t understand the principles behind email marketing? Well, by reading this article, you will get all the help you need when it comes to email marketing.

Email marketing has been adopted by many entrepreneurs simply because it’s the new and improved way of advertising. The rise in popularity in email marketing can be attributed to the fact that it’s cheaper compared to other advertising techniques. For instance, you can reach many respondents with just once click instead of wasting money posting adverts in newspapers or billboards. Quite amazing, isn’t it?

So, if you recently adopted email marketing, below are some of the do’s and don’ts to help you become better at it.

1. Make sure that all your emails are written in the first person. If you are sending the introductory emails make sure that you address the target audience personally so as to invoke their response.

2. Make an offer to the recipient (which is simply the product or service you will offer them). You can also offer them newsletters, survey forms etc.

3. Interact with your respondents. For instance, if anyone responds to the email, you can answer them just to show goodwill on your part. If they share concerns, ideas, ask questions or even rant about anything, don’t ignore them. Let them remain potential customers for a while and showcase all your products or services to them.

4. Make sure all your messages have a call to action which will inform the respondents what you want them to do (for instance visit your website) and ask them to do that politely.

5. Whatever you do, make sure it’s easy for the respondents to unsubscribe from your email list. Make sure that your un-subscription clause is creative. For instance, most people set their spam filter to recognize certain spam words so avoid such clauses while you portray the same message.

6. Do you know that email spamming is considered as an offense? The people in your email list have to acknowledge that they had subscribed for your newsletters or emails. Sending more than 200 emails with the same message is considered spamming especially if you don’t have permission to do that.

7. When sending your emails make sure the information is brief and to the point to avoid over saturating your customers. In the case of newsletters, send them once a month or once every 2 months to avoid too much repetition of the same message. With regard to general emails, send them only when necessary, especially if there is a new product you want to advertise or improvements on an old product. Note that, too much saturation of information to recipients may result in them unsubscribing from your service.

8. Respect the respondents in your email list such that you avoid swapping or renting your email list to other marketers. If you do this, chances are that most people will unsubscribe from your service.
