Succeed In Email Marketing With A Purpose-driven Design
Email marketing success doesn’t depend only on compelling wording. The design and layout of the email have to serve your purpose — that is, turning mere visitors into long-term customers, — as well. Here we’ll have a look at the reasons why having a good design is important not only for websites but also, and perhaps even more so, for emails.
How a good email design converts visitors into customers
If you have an email list with loyal subscribers, only one question is on your mind: how to drive them into buying something? Effective subject lines and engrossing storytelling are good for achieving that. However, an email gets much more effective once it’s supplemented with a design that draws the recipients’ attention to the important stuff.
The most stripped-down story of the design-works-miracles principle goes like this: a person reading your email wants to locate the ‘read more’ or ‘buy now’ button. He cannot find it easily and doesn’t read on, leaving you with a frustrated visitor where there was a potential customer before. A good design, on the other hand, would have had the button placed prominently, as if clicking it was the most natural thing in the world.
Of course, this oversimplified example merely illustrates the top of the iceberg. What you really want to do is draw the readers’ attention to your sales pitch with various design bits that signal that the really important part is the part you want them to click. A good design will make the important parts of your email stand out and the non-essential parts will not interfere with campaign goals.
Technical knowledge
And of course, there’s the technical knowledge needed for creating a good email. While your emails may look fine when you open them in Gmail, God knows what email clients your visitors will be using. Character encoding, adding alt tags to images, hacking around the lack of feature support for various rendering engines… these are but a few things an email designer has to know besides knowing how to create a content-centric design.
