4 Elements of a Clean Web Design

1st November, 2012

Simple, clean web designs are becoming popular. However, make no mistake about it; there is a significant difference between a clean design and an empty, bare website. Let’s look at some of the common traits of a clean web design.

The page layout structure is solid

If you browse through a few sites that fall into the “clean” category, you will quickly realize that there is nothing random here, there is nothing left to chance. These sites all have a well thought-out grid. For those not familiar with the concept, it comes down to invisible columns and rows that provide structure. This sense of order can establish consistency, rhythm, and hierarchy for the designer.

The typography is good

Even though it is easy to go overboard with design, restraint is key when it comes to getting that “clean” look for a design. A design can become disorderly and disjointed when too many typefaces are forced to compete with one another. If you look at some of the best sites, you will see one or two typefaces. In order to establish a clear typographic hierarchy, these change in weight and color.

They use a limited color palette

When working in print, we often limit color because of budget restraints. However, online you have the option to display millions of colors free of charge. Nevertheless, websites that have a clean design tend to use limited color palettes. Oftentimes they select a single color and use core grays. The color is used for only the most important elements (the headers and the links). This not only visually unites the elements, but also enhances usability for the reader.

Consistent imagery

If it bothers you that imagery (charts, illustrations, photography) on sites tend to change from page to page throughout the same site, you are not alone. Ensuring that these elements have a stylistic harmony between them is an important aspect of a website that has a clean look.
