7 Tips For Creating Landing Pages That Work

17th October, 2012

Landing pages are the bread & butter of contemporary marketing. A good landing page will convert visitors into customers, but a poorly designed page will drive them away. Here are some seven steps that’ll help you create the landing page you’ve always had in your mind.

1. Headlines

Start with the main headline. A good headline will keep your landing page focused and the visitor interested. There should probably more than a single headline, but different times call for different measures, so it’s up to you, really.

2. Clear call-to-action

The CTA should be prominent, but you already know that. Maybe try incorporating something akin to it in the landing page URL? Not many companies do, so be creative with your CTA.

3. Build trust

Testimonials tend to be, well, the most creative text in landing pages. However, made-up or not, they are crucial to getting a first-time visitor to invest time or money in your services. Also, spell check and re-read the copy until you’re sure it’s perfect — error-free copy builds trust as well.

4. Different versions for different visitors

You don’t have to have a separate design for different incoming links, however, switch things around and keep in mind that, for example, a Twitter landing page should be different from a search engine or adsense landing page.

5. Visually attractive

Use media. Sexy, scary, or a bit ‘out there’ — whatever works. Images and videos related to what you’re selling help drawing the visitor deeper into your website — and who knows, maybe he or she will actually read the copy if the rest looks good.

6. Incorporate ‘Free!’ and urgency in the landing page

While ‘Free!’ might not work if you’re selling actual products, reduced risks sometimes equal irrational buying decisions, as Dan Ariely argues in Predictably Irrational. Incorporate urgency by stating that the offer doesn’t last forever. It makes the visitor feel special, and works on several different levels.

7. A/B testing

Similar to #4, A/B testing works not only for different incoming links but altogether helps you determine what works and what doesn’t. Again, switch things around and see what converts better.
